Reported/Observed Symptom:
Diagnostic Report: Ideal Isar Boiler Repair in Grimsby DN32 with Fault Code L9

Customer reported boiler was locking out with no heating or hot water. Boiler won't reset unless turned off for ~1 hour.

Boiler is displaying fault code "L9", alongside 3 horizontal lines.

Fault Code: L9

Diagnosis/Notes:
Fault code L9 in conjunction with 3 horizontal lines signifies a heat exchanger overheat fault.

Boiler central heating pressure is set to 1.2 bar and system has been bled for air.

Tested pump and it's operational / not air locked.

Tested boiler overheat thermistor resistance with multi-meter and measured 9,836 Ω @ approx 22°C. Manufacturer specified a range of 9,836 - 10300 Ω, so we're approximately within the range.

Vrey dirty water inside boiler indicates it's probably a magnatite blockage / particle deposits restricting flow within the heat exchanger.

Advising we central heating chemical flush and Magnacleanse. The boiler is >15 years old and has been discontinued.

Resolution

Additional Comments

Advised customer boiler is old / parts have been discontinued. But customer cannot afford a replacement boiler, so we're going to do everything possible to get their boiler operational again. But have advised them to start saving a little every month because this repair doesn't suddenly make a boiler 10 years younger.

Booked a follow up appointment with the customer. Added Fernox F9 central heating cleaner to system and allowed it to break down magnetite for 48 hours prior to the flush.

The Magnacleanse stripped out a lot of black sludge out their system. Performed 3 flushes in total, refilled the system and dosed with fresh inhibitor.

Boiler appears to be fully operational since cleaning their system.
