Kitchen Fitter Nightmares: The Danger of Flexible Hoses on Gas Hobs
When you invest in a new kitchen, you expect the job to be done right, from the cabinets down to the pipework. Unfortunately, a recent call-out we attended on Heneage Road in Grimsby (DN32) perfectly highlights the hidden dangers of letting unqualified kitchen fitters handle gas installations.
What was supposed to be a straightforward gas safety check revealed a shocking catalogue of errors that left the tenant living with a ticking time bomb.
The Grimsby Job: A Recipe for Disaster

When we inspected the built-in gas hob, we immediately found it was connected using a black flexible cooker hose. This is a massive red flag. Whilst this type of flexible hoses have their place, they are strictly designed for freestanding cookers, never for built-in hobs.
To make matters worse, this wasn't just any hose. Here is exactly what we found concealed behind the oven:
- Non-Approved Materials: The hose used was not BS 669-1 approved, meaning it lacked the fundamental safety certifications required for standard domestic gas hob connections.
- A Severe Fire Hazard: The hose was far too long and had been shoved under the countertop, resting directly against the casing of the hot oven below. Over time, the heat from the oven would inevitably degrade the soft rubber hose, leading to a catastrophic gas leak or fire.
- No Isolation Valve: The fitters entirely omitted the local isolation valve. In the event of a leak or an emergency, there was no way to quickly and safely shut off the gas supply to the appliance.
- No Smoke Alarms: To compound this severe fire risk, the property didn't have a single smoke alarm installed. The tenant was completely unaware of the danger concealed just inches away from where they cooked every day.
- Unprotected Electrical Cables: Where any gas service pipework is located within 25mm from electrical cables, mechanical protection (like plastic trunking) should be used.
Why a Flexible Hose on a Gas Hob Means Paying Twice
Kitchen fitters do an excellent job with cabinetry, worktops, and tiling. However, gas work is a highly regulated, specialised trade.
Often, fitters will offer to "plumb in" the appliances to speed up the job or keep the initial quote looking attractive. This is a false economy. When corners are cut, like using a cheap, non-approved flexible hose instead of taking the time to route proper pipework, the customer always ends up paying twice.
Once a Gas Safe engineer inspects the property, the illegal setup has to be condemned, stripped out, and rebuilt from scratch to meet strict safety regulations.
Can You Use a Flexible Cooker Hose on a Gas Hob?
The short answer: Standard flexible rubber cooker hoses (bayonet style) are not permitted on built-in gas hobs. Connection must be made using rigid copper pipework or an approved corrugated stainless steel flexible hose—provided the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly permit it.
Manufacturer Instructions & Standards (BS 6172)
While UK standards generally specify rigid copper for built-in cooking appliances, the appliance Manufacturer's Instructions (MI) always take precedence - so check the manual! But with more European and international models entering the UK market, some now allow approved metallic flexible hoses (BS EN 14800 or BS EN 15266). However, traditional black rubber/elastomeric cooker hoses are prohibited.
Why Rigid Copper or Stainless Steel is Required
- Thermal Exposure: Built-in hobs typically sit directly above an under-counter oven. Rigid copper and corrugated stainless steel can withstand the ambient radiant heat that would degrade, harden, or melt standard rubber hoses over time.
- Mechanical Protection: Tight voids behind drawers, base units, and under-counter appliances risk kinking, pinching, or crushing a soft hose. Rigid pipework maintains physical integrity within confined cabinetry.
- Emergency Isolation: Regardless of the final connection method, an accessible, correctly positioned isolation valve must be installed adjacent to the appliance for servicing and emergency shut-off.
Don't Leave Gas Safety to Chance
If you are planning a kitchen renovation, ensure your fitters are coordinating with a registered Gas Safe engineer. Don't risk your property or your life to save a few pounds on the installation.

I had a boiler issue, stopped working. He arrived on the same day and ensured that the boiler works while we wait for parts. Kept me updated while parts were coming and asked if the boiler is still working. Always kept the area clean and explained what was the issue. Great job! Definitely recommend.Posted on Google

Fantastic service from Guy, who travelled out to Market Rasen on a Sunday when our boiler stopped working. He was super professional, quick to sort the issue, and great value for money. With kids in the house, getting the heating and hot water back on meant everything, definitely one of those luxuries you take for granted until they’re gone. Really appreciate the effort and would highly recommend.Posted on Google

Guy came to us today which was a wet and cold Sunday afternoon as my Elderly Mother was without heating. After initial contact a time was agreed and Guy arrived on the dot.... He was very good and explained everything he was doing ensuring we understood what was happening. Guy was very clean and there was not a single bit of mess left behind. He made sure we were happy with the work and didnt leave until he was 100% sure the problem was fixed. There was no hard sell with Guy at all he explained a few options for us in the future. Would HIGHLY reccommend Guy and have saved his details for future use. 5☆☆☆☆☆Posted on Google
