Main 30HE Hot Water Fault Finding
A Professional Diagnostic Guide
The Main 30HE was a staple of many installs across North East Lincolnshire for years. While they are generally robust workhorses, ageing components, particularly within the Domestic Hot Water (DHW) circuit, can lead to intermittent faults that test even the most experienced engineer. At iWarm, we see these units regularly from Grimsby to Lincoln, and we know that a systematic approach is the only way to avoid unnecessary part-darting.
If you are a landlord in Louth needing a Gas Safety Certificate or a homeowner in Scunthorpe dealing with a lukewarm shower, this guide breaks down the DHW logic for the 30HE.
Initial Technical Benchmarks
Before stripping the casing, confirm the fundamentals. We’re looking for a stable 230V ~ 50Hz supply and a cold system pressure of 0.5 bar. From a combustion perspective, ensure you have a minimum working gas pressure of 19.5mbar for natural gas.
If the boiler is completely dead, don't jump to the PCB immediately. Verify continuity across terminals a&b and a&3, and check the PCB-A4 connector (terminals 4&5). If the external controls are calling and the fuses are intact but the board isn't responding, then you’re likely looking at a Boiler Repair involving a board swap.
DHW Flow and Microswitch Logic
The 30HE relies on a physical flow rate to initiate the DHW sequence.
- The 2.5l/min Threshold: If the flow rate is below this, the DHW flow switch won’t operate. In areas with heavy scale or older pipework like Cleethorpes or Immingham, we often find the main water filter or the differential assembly is restricted.
- The Diaphragm: If the flow rate is healthy but the rod isn't moving to engage the microswitch, the DHW flow valve diaphragm is likely perished.
- The Indicator: If the "tap" neon fails to illuminate despite flow, check continuity across the DHW flow microswitch and the PCB A5 connector (terminals 5&6).
The Pump and Primary Flow Sequence
If the "triangle" indicator is flashing, the boiler has detected a circulation or pressure issue.
- Pressure: Ensure the system is between 0.5–1.5 bar.
- The Pump: Verify 230V at the pump and at PCB A4 (terminals 3 & 6). If the pump is spinning but the primary flow switch isn't proving, check the primary flow diaphragm.
- Air Locks: Ensure the Auto Air Vent (AAV) is open.
In many cases, poor circulation leading to DHW faults is caused by sludge build-up in the primary heat exchanger. We often recommend a Magnacleanse System Flushing or a full Chemical System Flushing to restore thermal efficiency and protect the new components.
Fan, Air Pressure Switch (APS), and Ignition
When the "thermometer" icon flashes, the overheat thermostat has likely tripped. If resetting doesn't work, measure the resistance of the thermostat—anything over 1.5 ohms when cool suggests a replacement is due.
If the "fan" icon flashes, the APS isn't proving. We check for:
- Blockages in the venturi or pressure tubes.
- Flue restrictions (common in rural installs in Market Rasen or Caistor).
- Fan failure (check for 230V at PCB A2, terminals 5&7).
Gas Valve and Modulation
If the "flame loss" neon is flashing, we look at the ignition electrodes and the gas valve. The flame sensing current should be approximately 1μA. For modulation issues, check the voltages at the gas valve coil: 9V DC for Max and 1V DC for Min. If these values are correct but the burner isn't modulating, the gas valve is the culprit.
For residents in Barton-upon-Humber or Brigg with aging 30HE units, these repairs can sometimes approach the cost of a modern, more efficient system. In those cases, we provide transparent advice on Boiler Installations to ensure long-term reliability.
Frequently Asked Questions:
This indicates the air pressure switch (APS) has failed to prove. This is often caused by a blocked venturi, moisture in the silicone tubes, or a fault with the fan itself. It requires a Gas Safe engineer to inspect the flue and internal fan components.
A flashing thermometer icon indicates overheating. The boiler’s safety limit thermostat has tripped to prevent damage. This is often due to a pump failure or a significant blockage in the system. You should have a professional perform a diagnostic check and potentially a Boiler Service.

I had a boiler issue, stopped working. He arrived on the same day and ensured that the boiler works while we wait for parts. Kept me updated while parts were coming and asked if the boiler is still working. Always kept the area clean and explained what was the issue. Great job! Definitely recommend.Posted on Google

Fantastic service from Guy, who travelled out to Market Rasen on a Sunday when our boiler stopped working. He was super professional, quick to sort the issue, and great value for money. With kids in the house, getting the heating and hot water back on meant everything, definitely one of those luxuries you take for granted until they’re gone. Really appreciate the effort and would highly recommend.Posted on Google

Guy came to us today which was a wet and cold Sunday afternoon as my Elderly Mother was without heating. After initial contact a time was agreed and Guy arrived on the dot.... He was very good and explained everything he was doing ensuring we understood what was happening. Guy was very clean and there was not a single bit of mess left behind. He made sure we were happy with the work and didnt leave until he was 100% sure the problem was fixed. There was no hard sell with Guy at all he explained a few options for us in the future. Would HIGHLY reccommend Guy and have saved his details for future use. 5☆☆☆☆☆Posted on Google
