The Burner Seal Lottery

When you open up the combustion chamber to clean it, you break the burner seal (also known as a gasket). Most boiler manufacturers explicitly state that this seal must be replaced once the chamber is opened.

This is where the raw costs start to vary wildly.

Depending on your boiler's design, these seals are made from different materials. Some use graphite seals, while others use a type of silicone foam. The manufacturing costs for these vary heavily—even between different models produced by the exact same brand.

For example:

• On many Baxi and Worcester models, a replacement seal will cost around £10. (Total service cost: £100).
• On an Ideal Logic, the burner gasket kit can cost around £40. (Total service cost: £130).

This isn't an indicator that one brand is better or worse than the other; it’s simply a difference in material and engineering design.

The Danger of the "Cheap" Service

Here’s the industry secret: engineers offering rock-bottom prices often aren't replacing these seals. They perform a quick visual check, maybe run a flue gas analyzer, and pack up. Or worse, they strip the boiler and reuse the old, compressed seal.

Over time, these seals naturally degrade. They become misshapen due to constant heating and cooling, and can eventually blow out completely. If a seal fails, highly dangerous products of combustion, including carbon monoxide, can leak directly into your home instead of going out the flue.

Reusing an old seal to keep the quote artificially cheap isn't just a false economy; it usually voids the manufacturer's warranty and presents a serious safety risk.

When you get a quote for a boiler service, always ask: "Does this price include a new burner seal if the manufacturer requires it?" If they hesitate, you probably have your answer.
