A Plain-English Guide to Smart Thermostats
If you’ve watched TV recently, you’ve probably seen adverts for smart thermostats like Hive or Google Nest. The marketing promises complete control of your heating and massive savings on your energy bills.
But for many homeowners across Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and North East Lincolnshire, the idea of managing their central heating from a mobile phone sounds overly complicated. What actually is a smart thermostat, will it work with your current boiler, and most importantly, does it actually save you money?
Here is an honest, straightforward look at smart heating controls.
What is a “Smart” Thermostat?
At its core, a smart thermostat does exactly the same job as the old dial on your hallway wall: it turns your heating on and off. The only difference is that it connects to your home’s Wi-Fi.
Because it’s connected to the internet, you can control your heating using an app on your smartphone or tablet, whether you are sitting on the sofa or sitting on a train.
The “Coming Home” Feature (No Tech Skills Required)
One of the best features of these systems is how they track your location. If you carry your mobile phone in your pocket or handbag, the thermostat’s app knows when you leave the house.
If you nip out to the shops or drive over to visit family and forget to turn the heating down, the system realises the house is empty and automatically turns the boiler off. When it senses you are travelling back home, it fires the boiler back up so the house is warm for the moment you walk through the front door. You don’t have to press a single button; the system simply stops you from paying to heat an empty house.
Will It Work With My Heating System?
The short answer is almost certainly yes. Smart thermostats are incredibly adaptable and can be wired into the vast majority of UK heating setups:
- Combi Boilers: These are the most common boilers in our area. A smart thermostat is a very straightforward swap for your existing controls.
- System and Heat-Only Boilers (with a hot water cylinder): If you have a hot water tank in the airing cupboard, models like the Hive Active Heating can control both your radiator temperatures and your hot water timings from the same app.
- Heat Pumps and Electric Boilers: Most premium smart thermostats are fully compatible with newer technologies like air source heat pumps and electric boilers, though they often require slightly different wiring configurations.
Which Brand is Best? (Hive vs. Nest vs. Salus)
There are dozens of models on the market, but as local heating engineers, we tend to see three main contenders:
- Hive: Backed by British Gas, this is arguably the most popular system in the UK. It is brilliant for people who want something simple. The app is incredibly easy to use, the screen is clear, and it does exactly what you tell it to do.
- Google Nest: This is the “clever” option. The Nest actually learns your routine over the first few weeks. It notices what time you usually turn the heating up in the morning and when you turn it down at night, and starts doing it for you automatically.
- Salus: If you aren’t bothered about having a trendy brand name on your wall, Salus is a heavily relied-upon “trade” brand. Their smart thermostats do all the crucial basics, like phone control and scheduling, but usually come in at a much lower price point than Hive or Nest.
The Verdict: Do They Actually Save Money?
A smart thermostat won’t magically make a broken boiler efficient, and it won’t stop heat escaping through draughty windows.
Where they do save money is by cutting out human error. If you work erratic shifts, travel frequently, or simply have a habit of leaving the heating on high when you go out, a smart thermostat will easily pay for itself in saved gas over a couple of winters. However, if you are retired, at home most of the day, and already keep a close eye on your thermostat dial, the financial savings will be much smaller.
