Vokera Boiler Repair Diagnostic Report: Solving a “No Hot Water” Mystery
Diagnostic Report: Vokera 25 Compact Boiler Repair on Weelsby Rd, Grimsby
At iWarm, we pride ourselves on delivering honest, thorough, and expert gas engineering services across Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and the wider North East Lincolnshire area. As a Gas Safe registered team (No. 932713), we see a vast array of central heating issues. Recently, we attended a callout that perfectly highlights the importance of thorough diagnostics and, most importantly, clear communication between the customer and the engineer.
The Initial Callout: No Hot Water
We received a call from a customer reporting a complete loss of hot water. We promptly attended the property to investigate the issue. The home was fitted with a Vokera Compact 25 combi boiler, situated in a bathroom cupboard. The customer had lived in the property for about five years, and the boiler appeared to be around eight to nine years old, having been installed a few years prior to them moving in.
Our first step in any Boiler Repairs scenario is to replicate the fault. I opened up the boiler casing and fired up the central heating system. The heating engaged perfectly and ran without a hitch. Next, I moved on to the domestic hot water side. I opened the bathroom taps, and the boiler fired up exactly as it should, delivering a steady stream of hot water.
At this stage, it is easy to assume the issue is an intermittent fault, but a good engineer never stops at the first hurdle.
Digging Deeper: System Pressure and Preventative Maintenance
While running the boiler under load, I noticed that the system pressure was creeping up. A quick check of the expansion vessel revealed that it was completely flat. This is a common issue in older systems and can lead to the boiler discharging water through the pressure relief valve.
Since the boiler was pushing a decade old, I decided the best course of action was to drain the system down, recharge the expansion vessel, and carry out a thorough Boiler Servicing. During the inspection, the internal components of the Vokera Compact 25 appeared to be in remarkably good condition. To ensure the hot water performance remained optimal, I also performed a targeted Chemical System Flushing on the plate heat exchanger to clear out any minor scaling or debris that could be restricting flow.
After reassembling the boiler and re-pressurising the system, I fired it up again. The bathroom tap ran hot, and the system pressure remained perfectly stable. The boiler was running like clockwork.
The Missing Piece of the Puzzle
Confident that the boiler was in excellent health, I invited the customer in to test the water and discuss the work carried out. The customer checked the bathroom basin tap, noted the hot water, and seemed pleased.
Then came the crucial piece of missing information.
The customer casually mentioned, “It was mostly while having a shower that we noticed the issue… the kitchen tap has actually been fine.”
If an engineer is told there is “no hot water” in a property, our immediate focus is the boiler, the central hub of the home’s hot water production. However, if the hot water is working flawlessly at the kitchen sink and the bathroom basin, but running cold in the shower, the boiler is rarely the culprit.
The True Diagnosis: A Faulty Shower Mixer Bar
With this new information, the diagnosis pivoted instantly. The issue had nothing to do with the Vokera boiler’s ability to generate hot water. Instead, the thermostatic cartridge inside the shower mixer bar had failed. The broken thermostat was unable to blend the hot and cold water correctly, resulting in a cold shower despite the boiler pumping out perfectly heated water.
While knowing this information from the start would have drastically reduced the diagnostic time, the outcome was still highly positive. Rather than facing the heavy expense of premature Boiler Installations, the customer simply needed a relatively inexpensive replacement shower bar. Furthermore, the boiler received a much-needed service, an expansion vessel recharge, and a flush of the plate heat exchanger, adding years to its operational lifespan and preventing future breakdowns.
The Takeaway: Help Us Help You
This callout serves as a great reminder for anyone experiencing plumbing or heating issues: provide your engineer with as much detail as possible right from the start.
If a fault only occurs on one specific tap, or only happens at a certain time of day, let us know! The more context you provide, the faster we can pinpoint the exact component at fault. Whether you are in Brigg, Louth, Immingham, or right here in Grimsby, the iWarm team is always ready to get to the bottom of your heating mysteries – even when the boiler isn’t to blame.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Why is my shower cold but my taps are hot? If your central heating boiler is successfully delivering hot water to your kitchen and bathroom taps but your shower remains cold, the issue is almost certainly localised to the shower itself. The most common cause is a failed thermostatic cartridge inside the shower mixer valve, which prevents the hot and cold water from blending correctly.
2. Why does my boiler pressure rise when the heating is on? A slight increase in pressure is normal as water expands when heated. However, if the pressure gauge rises rapidly or exceeds 3 bar (often causing the pressure relief valve to leak outside), it usually indicates a flat or faulty expansion vessel. Recharging or replacing the expansion vessel during a standard boiler service will resolve this.
3. What is a chemical flush for a plate heat exchanger? The plate heat exchanger is the component in a combi boiler that transfers heat from the central heating water to your domestic hot water. Over time, it can become partially blocked with limescale or magnetite sludge. A chemical flush pushes specialised cleaning agents through the component to dissolve these blockages, restoring hot water flow and temperature.
4. How long should a Vokera Compact combi boiler last? With annual servicing and proper water quality management (such as utilising Magnacleanse system flushing and adding central heating inhibitor), a Vokera Compact boiler can easily last between 10 to 15 years. Regular maintenance prevents the degradation of internal components and ensures the unit operates safely and efficiently.
5. Do I need a new boiler if I have no hot water? Not necessarily. A loss of hot water can be caused by various repairable issues, such as a blocked plate heat exchanger, a faulty diverter valve, a broken flow sensor, or even external factors like a broken shower thermostat. A Gas Safe registered engineer should always perform a full diagnostic check before recommending a boiler replacement.

Fantastic service from Guy, who travelled out to Market Rasen on a Sunday when our boiler stopped working. He was super professional, quick to sort the issue, and great value for money. With kids in the house, getting the heating and hot water back on meant everything, definitely one of those luxuries you take for granted until they’re gone. Really appreciate the effort and would highly recommend.Posted on Google

Guy came to us today which was a wet and cold Sunday afternoon as my Elderly Mother was without heating. After initial contact a time was agreed and Guy arrived on the dot.... He was very good and explained everything he was doing ensuring we understood what was happening. Guy was very clean and there was not a single bit of mess left behind. He made sure we were happy with the work and didnt leave until he was 100% sure the problem was fixed. There was no hard sell with Guy at all he explained a few options for us in the future. Would HIGHLY reccommend Guy and have saved his details for future use. 5☆☆☆☆☆Posted on Google
