What is Magnetite? Fixing Black Sludge in Radiators

The Hidden Danger of Magnetite Sludge
During a recent Sunday emergency callout in Holton le Clay, we attended a boiler breakdown that perfectly highlighted one of the biggest, yet most preventable, threats to domestic boilers – magnetite in central heating systems.
When we drained the system’s magnetic filter, it dropped a pan full of pitch-black water. To show the customer exactly what was circulating through her radiators and boiler, we ran a quick demonstration. We dropped a magnet into that black water. Within seconds, the water turned completely clear, leaving the magnet covered in a thick layer of iron particles.

That black sludge isn’t just mud or dirt. It is magnetite, and if allowed to accumulate in your central heating system, it is actively destroying your boiler.
What is Magnetite?
Magnetite is dissolved metal. When the water inside your central heating system reacts with the inside of your steel radiators, it causes them to rust from the inside out. This corrosion flakes off and breaks down into microscopic iron particles suspended in the water, turning it into a thick, abrasive black sludge.
As this sludge is pumped around your house, it acts like liquid sandpaper. It grinds down pump bearings, blocks narrow pipework, and completely chokes the boiler’s heat exchangers.
The “Topping Up” Trap: How Inhibitor Gets Diluted
Your system shouldn’t rust if it was commissioned correctly. A healthy heating system contains a chemical called central heating inhibitor, which coats the inside of the radiators and stops the chemical reaction that creates magnetite.
However, the inhibitor doesn’t last forever, and it gets easily diluted. If your boiler occasionally loses pressure and you have to use the filling loop to “top it up,” you are introducing fresh mains water into the system. Every time you do this, you dilute the chemical inhibitor. Over a few years, the protection disappears completely, the rusting begins, and the magnetite sludge takes over.
Prevention is Cheaper Than the Cure
Just because your boiler is working right now doesn’t mean your system is clean. Waiting for the boiler to lock out or a pump to fail before dealing with sludge is an incredibly expensive way to maintain your heating.
It is vital to actively clean and protect your central heating system every few years.
1. Magnetic System Filters
If you don’t have a magnetic system filter installed on your boiler’s return pipework, you need one. These inline filters act as a trap, catching the suspended magnetite before it can enter the boiler and cause critical damage. We can retrofit these to almost any existing heating system.
2. Magnacleanse & Chemical Flushing
If your radiators are cold at the bottom, or your bleed valves are spitting out black water, the system needs professional cleaning. We offer comprehensive chemical central heating flushing and Magnacleanse treatments. We attach a powerful external magnetic filtration unit to your pipework and chemically agitate the system, ripping the sludge out of your radiators and safely disposing of it.
Once the system is clean, we dose it with fresh, high-quality chemical inhibitor to stop the corrosion from returning.
Keep Your System Healthy
Don’t wait for magnetite to destroy your boiler. Whether you need a routine annual boiler service, a magnetic filter installed, or you’re looking for a full Magnacleanse central heating system flush, iWarm is here to help.
